In an effort to contain the virus, many schools around the world have closed. For example, across the U.S. more than 480 school districts and educational centers are shut with 22 more scheduled to close, statistics show. Staying in self-quarantine is not that easy, especially for the little ones.
Most school activates have to be carried out at home, but with the current lockdown, it’s very hard to keep the brains ticking and focus centered. To make life feel “normal” is very important for children. That’s why having a couple of fun and educational activities to do will be very useful.
Here are a few suggestions that can come in handy.
1. Writing Competition
Storytelling is an important factor in a child’s education. They create a sense of wonder, broaden their knowledge and teach them about life. With stories, children learn to develop appreciation and respect for different cultures, religions, and aspects of life.
That’s why creating a story inspired challenge can be an effective way to encourage children to do something educational. Inspire your kids to write their own stories. They can include anything from:
• Fantasy woods
• Animal kingdom
• Mysterious adventures
With more children, storytelling can turn into a competition. Gather the family and let them read aloud.
Letting a child participate in simple cooking activities will give them the opportunity to learn about health. Show them how to wash the fruits and veggies, how to use flour and sugar, etc. By measuring the recipes, they can develop excellent measuring skills (quite handy for math class), and by following the instruction manual, they will polish their language skills. With constant cooking activities, children learn to appreciate the food on the table.
3. Playing With Clay or Dough
According to research, model making is an effective way to boost hand-eye coordination and focus. It’s one of those activities that is excellent for the brain. It improves concentration, executive functions (organizing, planning, memory), and visual skills. So, get some dough or clay, and challenge your kids to make an extravagant model.
4. Presentations and Demonstrations
Does your child love to play with Legos? Or maybe they spend a lot of time on the computer? Whatever your kid prefers to do, challenge them to find out everything about their favorite thing. For example, challenge them to find out who invented Legos. How the first computer came to be?
Let them research this information online and encourage them to make a presentation or demonstration for all their work. Not only will they keep their brain engaged and active, but they will also have some cool knowledge to show off.
5. Treasure Hunting
Kids love to hide and seek. But, if you want to keep them engaged for much longer, you have to take the game to a whole new level. Make a treasure hunt. Hide a couple of fun things around the house and draft up a puzzle for them to solve. With strategic planning, you can keep the kids focused and entertained. Don’t forget a prize at the end.
Staying in self-isolation with little children is not easy. But, with the right inspiration and activities, you can enjoy some quality time with your kids and have fun at the same time. Of course, there are plenty of ways to overcome quarantine boredom, which is why we decided to share a few of them. Every activity has something unique to offer.
